J&J Gardens

this is the front of the free shirt which is further described below.

Explanation

Detritus

J&J Gardens was a greenhouse located in Boardman, Ohio. I do not recall anything specific to this greenhouse that would distinguish it from any other local horticulture shop. J&J Gardens was sold to Cleveland-based Petitti Garden Centers ⇒ purchased J&J in 2002. The store conducted business with neither bombast nor controversy. If I were going to pay money, I would prefer that in a business. Writing about such a business for a Free Shirt Archive, however, presents a challenge.

Such a nondescript business name is bound to picked up by others. Other J&J gardening businesses out there appear to still be in business. There are other three other current matches located in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia ⇒, Altona, Manitoba, Canada ⇒, & Layton, Utah, USA ⇒. There is also a J&J Nursery Spring, Texas, USA ⇒ and a pair of gardeners in San Jose, California, USA ⇒. I did not intend to add to the confusion of the visitors that wanted some other J&J from which I do not have any free shirts.

Improper Fit

My Donor Grandma (In Memory of)* used to work at J&J Gardens as part-time bow maker just to have something to do. She seemed to like the people with whom she worked. I understood that the pay was a pittance, but sufficient because the goal was to pass the time.

As an employee, she was given a shirt to wear while on duty. Some time after my Grandma’s death, Donor Aunt Barb* gave me Grandma’s work shirt. The thing that struck me about this shirt was how comically large it was for the person that was supposed to wear it. A comparable bagginess that comes to mind are MC Hammer pants ⇒. Maybe that was the only remaining size that J&J had? I probably will never know considering how much time has passed since the closing of the business and my Grandma’s death.

The Spoils Of Being There

My Donor Mother* once won a gift certificate from the company. In order to claim the prize, the winner had to be present at the drawing. Hers was the first name drawn after 14 others did not bother to show up. Some of the plants purchased with that gift certificate are still alive at my parents’ home.
