This error is closely related to the famous 404 error. The difference is that a 410 is meant to express that the resource is never coming back whereas a 404 can indicate, among other things, that the non-existence of a page is simply meant to be temporary. Quite often, other webmasters will not utilize the 410. Instead it is common to leave hanging 404s. Some webmasters decide to “unpublish” ⇒ content. These actions are not wrong, though they can also be described as anti-standard at best or anti-user at worst.
